Have you ever been to an unorganized place, such as a store or a relative’s home? What did you think?
Should you stay away from unorganized warehouses? Yes. Why? Well, because good organization is the key to any warehouse worth utilizing– and if it’s unorganized, you’ll have more headaches than you want. A well-organized warehouse runs efficiently.
If you get the chance to actually visit a warehouse you’re thinking of using, look for certain things that will tell you it’s unorganized.
How can you tell if a warehouse is unorganized?
For starters, look to see if inventory is overstocked. You can tell this is the case if you can barely move through aisles because there’s so much stuff in the place that they’ve started piling it in the aisles where it doesn’t belong.
Next, look at product labels. If items aren’t labeled, that’s a red flag. There should be somewhat detailed labels (and signage) all over the place!
Thirdly, how’s the warehouse’s layout? Is it hard to find your way around because it’s so unorganized? If so, that’s not good. Are things where they shouldn’t be, in your opinion? If so, that’s inefficient.
How about cleanliness? Organized warehouses are usually kept relatively clean. Unorganized ones are messy or dirty.
Look around and see if any safety measures are in place and being used– or not. Are there easily findable fire extinguishers and exit signs? Are doors/exits blocked? Poor safety management is a sign that the warehouse is unorganized.
Finally, do you see some signs of automation? In this day and age it’s best if there are at least some– otherwise, the warehouse isn’t “up-to-date” with the times, and is most likely unorganized because it hasn’t kept up with progress.
